According to VentureBeat, virtual world / MMO company World Golf Tour has raised second-round funding in "double-digit millions of dollars" (the company hasn't announced exactly how much). World Golf Tour is an interesting blend between a multiplayer online golf game, and a virtual world with social networking elements.
The site is Flash-based and free to play, and plans to introduce on-course chat and player invitations soon. The featured course (Bali Hai) is based on a real-world course, and World Golf Tour has been in closed beta testing for a while, with a launch due in July.
According to VentureBeat, more than 500,000 people have played the demo that’s been available on the company’s website. The business model appears to be sponsorship, with golfing companies able to pay for their products to be showcased within the world. It’s definitely one to watch come July.
