It's not all naked furries, y'all. IT World has a really interesting article on 'Career Networking in Second Life' telling IT professionals how they can make the most of Linden Lab's virtual world to enhance their job prospects.
It covers topics including job interviews, IT-related groups, and meet’n’greets. But the part that grabbed my attention focused on what to wear for those virtual job interviews, which are becoming an increasingly popular recruitment tool:
“A common job tip is to dress for the job you want, not the one you have. But how does that work in the digital world? Say the experts: your avatar - the in-world visual representation of yourself - must look appropriate for networking and job interviews. But this doesn’t necessarily mean a digitalized version of you in a suit! Avatars should be customized to show your personality and your creativity, while also showing that you didn’t just sign up for the service earlier that day. Get a feel for the world early on, and try to use this when dressing your avatar.”
Another good tip is to learn the interface before networking in Second Life, so as not to appear an obvious newbie. I would also suggest deleting those avatar actions you picked up in the dodgy adult club, just in case a misplaced click leads to mid-interview shame…
