The latest virtual world aimed at kids and teens is VizWoz, a UK startup that went live on Friday. It's free to use, although accessing the full features involves becoming a 'VizWoz VIP', which costs at least £2.95 a month, but gives access to more rooms, games, accessories and clothes for users' avatars.
The graphics are 2D rather than Second Life-style 3D, although that’s not a criticism, since many worlds aimed at younger users opt for 2D to make them as accessible as possible. The locations are themed, with Hollywood, a medieval castle, a futuristic city and a paradise island.
One innovative idea is the inclusion of a virtual police force, the VizCops. It’s described as “a unique proactive approach to in-world moderation where a cop will turn up to provide protection from ‘griefers’ intent on ruining your online fun”. I assume this means a human moderator, albeit in a virtual uniform.
There’s huge competition in the kidworld space, but VizWoz’ UK focus could enable it to build a community quickly, since many of these worlds are more focused on the US.
