Vollee demonstrates mobile Second Life client

Comments [1] | 23 April 2008

I've written here before about Vollee's plans to make Second Life accessible through mobile devices, but the company has just given Newsweek a demo of its technology in action and opened up registrations for its public beta test. See the video above for a quick trailer, and then read on for more info about the beta.

You can sign up for the beta now here, although the client won’t be sent out to people who register until May at least. Apparently the client is a mere 100KB download - presumably because it’s streaming the content over the air - with the bulk of the processing work being done on Vollee’s servers.

The beta will be free of charge, but Vollee is ensuring users have suitable data plans with their operators, so they’re not stung for data charges when they use the application. Existing Second Life residents will be able to use their accounts, but newcomers will have to sign up online first, before using the mobile client.

Wow! The video is impressive, and it shows a very accurate port of the current SL client. This is of course both a positive and a negative: those who are familiar with the Second Life user interface might not even recall how confusing and frustrating it is to newcomers. Some of this frustration is bound to come back when the same client with the same interface is used on a mobile phone.

It would have been nice to see a serious effort to rethink how users should interact with the online world. We will have to wait for an iPhone version for that I assume, as the iPhone users would not accept a less then totally smooth experience!
