Vivaty takes funding for 3D Facebook chatrooms

Is there any phrase more likely to get VCs flinging money at you than '3D Facebook chatrooms'? I don't think so. The company is Vivati, a US-based startup founded by former Electronic Arts exec Keith McCurdy.

Actually, more recently he’s been in executive positions at a couple of mobile games companies, so his new venture is another example of people exiting that industry in favour of virtual worlds and/or Web 2.0.

Anyway, PaidContent is reporting that Vivaty’s business model is 3D chatrooms, to be installed on people’s Facebook profiles. It links to a cached version of the firm’s website, which gives some blurb, promising:

“That kid in the candy store thrill, like the first time you discovered really good stuff on the Web… A “no rules” and “no walls” mentality, where anything that’s possible in a virtual world is right there in your web browser… A new high-def “face” for your favorite web stuff and friends - the ones you already have and the ones you want to meet… Your own take on “personal” and “virtual” - in a scene that lives anywhere on the Web and takes just 2 clicks to get started.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the ‘no rules’ idea translates to chatrooms, which unless they’re age-verified, require significant moderation. The company’s undisclosed funding comes from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Buyers, and Mohr Davidow, says PaidContent.
