California-based virtual events company Unisfair has raised $10 million from Norwest Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital. It's the company's second round of funding, following an initial round backed purely by Sequoia. The company specialises in running virtual events such as industry conferences and job fairs, and according to Venturebeat, it's hosted around 400 events in the last year and a half, with an average attendance of 1,500. Clients include Cisco, Cognos and Nielsen.
Besides showing the growing interest in these b2b applications for virtual worlds, the funding news also represents backing for Unisfair’s browser-based approach, rather than forcing users to download a proprietary application. Venturebeat points out that while some companies have tried to hold these kind of events within Second Life, Unisfair is focused on being easier to use, and requiring no additional software.
Unisfair hasn’t officially announced the funding as far as I can make out, so there’s scant information in how it plans to spend that $10 million above and beyond maintaining its current activities.
