Universal Music Group to hold internal conference in Second Life

Comments [0] | 25 April 2008

When it comes to record labels, they don't come bigger than Universal Music Group. So the news that UMG is using Second Life for its annual Pan-European company conference will come as a big boost to the notion of virtual worlds as corporate tools.

UMG’s conference is a two-day affair, which will involve more than 100 delegates holding meetings and attending seminars. The label has hired virtual worlds agency Phoenix Film & Television to build the environment for the conference.

The benefits are varied, including the cost savings on travel and logistics. However, it also fits in with UMG’s aim of reducing the environmental impact of its operations, by keeping delegates at home. It’s certainly one of the most high-profile internal virtual conferences that I’ve heard of, at least from a company outside the established virtual players like IBM and Cisco.

Right now, rival labels are probably wondering if they can somehow virtually parachute in on a spy mission…
