Tourism Ireland holding three-day festival in Second Life

Comments [1] | 26 October 2007

tourism-island.jpg Real-world tourism meets virtuality in the Discover Ireland festival, a three-day event taking place at Dublin in SL. Five bands and seven DJs will be playing, alongside fashion shows, photographic exhibitions and promotional videos, with the obligatory free t-shirts being given out to visitors. The Guardian makes the point that Tourism Ireland, the Irish tourist board, isn't the first to set up shop within Second Life, having been beaten to the punch by Sweden and the Netherlands. Of course, virtual pints of Guinness can't hope to live up to the real thing, but there'll hopefully be enough craic going round to deliver a return on Tourism Ireland's investment - presumably in the form of Second Lifers packing their bags to visit the real Dublin. As the owner of Dublin in Second Life, I would disagree with the notion that Tourism Ireland are not the first. Other Tourist Authorities have gone into Second life like Real businesses have. They put up a showcase and hope people come along to see it.

In contrast, Tourism Ireland have decided to use an existing Second Life build, and run a sustained campaign within that environment to engage the residents of Second Life and get them exposed to the brand. Sweden and the Netherlands have taken little interest in what interests Second Life residents, and will, in return, get little engagement from them.
