The US-based Tech Museum of Innovation has opened a new The Tech Virtual Test Zone to showcase interactive exhibits originally created in Second Life. It'll show exhibits around specific themes, with the first being 'Art, Film & Music', which at least has a fairly broad scope (and is also the theme of a permanent gallery due to open in 2010 at the museum).
It’s an intriguing project, with 49 exhibits having been originally shown in the museum’s virtual gallery, with seven making the cut to become real-world exhibits. President Peter Friess explains:
“The Tech has engaged an international community of creative people—including experts in art, film, music, and technology from all over the world—who are attracted to the open source, Web 2.0 revolutions that have fueled a participatory, collaborative culture. Through The Tech Virtual, we’ve been able to bring these experts together to create exhibits that are imaginative, educational, and utterly unique. We are breaking down the barriers of the traditional exhibit design process and entering into a new era of innovative content creation utilizing technology tools and ideas that have grown out of Silicon Valley. The Tech Virtual Test Zone is validation that applying the open source concept to museum content development can create some amazing and wonderful outcomes.”
