Interesting news on a course in Second Life at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. It included a module titled 'Unreal Central Perspective' examining the representation of architecture within Linden Lab's virtual world, and how it's influenced by gaming, and the fact that it's unrestricted by gravity and materials.
The course has actually spawned an architecture firm called studio un/real, which works across new media and architecture, having produced a Virtu-Real installation for the Swedish Embassy in the US, which uses innovative video and voice streaming to link the real-world embassy with its Second Life equivalent.
The crossover between architecture and virtual worlds is well established, although it’s encouraging to see academic courses taking it up in this way - and spawning startups willing to investigate the commercial possibilities.
