Square Enix launches Ellark mobile MMO funded by microtransactions

Square Enix has been one of the more forward-looking console publishers when it comes to mobile, as seen with its mobile-exclusive games based on its Final Fantasy series. Now the publisher has announced an all-new MMO for mobiles, called Ellark.

The company hasn’t announced many more details, in terms of plot or gameplay. However, the game will be released in June on all three Japanese mobile operators, and will be free to download and play, with revenues coming from micro-transactions when players buy items in-game.

Apparently Square Enix is launching a dedicated virtual currency for use in the game (and presumably others) called ‘Mobicoins’, which players will buy using their credit cards. Ellark is also being described as a ‘Mail Play Game’ - implying communication between players using their phones’ email applications.

The game has a holding page (in Japanese) here.
