It might sound a bit strange for a charity based on getting people exercising in the real world to launch in Second Life, but that's what UK-based Sport Relief has done with the Sport Relief Island. Its aim: to raise funds from Linden Lab's community during the weekend of 14-16 March.
The charity is working with virtual agency We Are Here, which has created a range of sporty virtual activities, including surfing, roller-skating and sky-diving. Avatars will be given customised Sport Relief t-shirts, and at the end of the weekend there’ll be a live music concert on the island. Sport Relief’s Martin Gill is certainly enthusiastic:
“The Sport Relief initiative allows us to showcase the global reach and flexibility of virtual platforms and is a great example of how activity in Second LifeĀ®* can make a real difference in real life. As a very efficient way to empower a social network to get involved with Sport Relief, we’re looking forward to learning more about the fundraising potential of this environment.”
It’s certainly a good cause, and the island looks to be well tied-in with the activities going on in the real world that weekend.
