We'll soon have to add a category for virtual worlds linked to real-world toys, such is the rush of the toy manufacturers to launch virtual offshoots. The latest is called Tech Decks Live, and it's the work of Spinmaster, which makes the Tech Decks finger skateboards (ask a 10-year-old...)
The world is due to launch this Summer, and is part virtual world and part MMO. Players will log in, create their own skater avatar, and then customise them with various items of gear, before riding the latest Tech Deck skateboards.
That’s where the value comes in for Spinmaster, since the world will act as a showcase for its latest products. The world will include chat, mini-games and trading alongside the customisation elements. There’s also a gamelike overall goal - to be selected to join a pro-skate team.
Tech Deck Live will be free to access, but users will be able to pay a monthly subscription to get premium features, such as their own room to customise. No word on whether advertising for other brands will be included though.
