SL Shakespeare Company gets set for Hamlet in Second Life

shakespeare-secondlife.jpg The idea of transferring theatrical productions from real-world stages to virtual worlds is rich with potential, and doubtless many people have tried it already. However, a high-profile new venture will see the SL Shakespeare Company put on Hamlet within Second Life, using real-time motion capture technology for the performance, in a virtual replica of London's Globe Theatre.

It sounds like a fiendishly-complex production, with historically accurate costumes, artificial intelligence, special effects and (possibly) real-time lip-synching. However, visual director Ina Centaur tells SLNN that there are also advantages, such as the lack of gravity, perfect weather conditions, and no budget restrictions when it comes to costumes and props. It can only be a matter of time before a big theatre company seizes some headlines with a simulcast within Second Life, but the SL Shakespeare Company is an intriguing example of something coming from Second Life itself, with huge ambition to push the boundaries.
