Siemens PLM Software expands presence in Second Life

Comments [0] | 5 March 2008

Siemens PLM Software is the latest company to ramp up its activities in Second Life, rather than pull out. It's launched a new feature on its Innovation Connection island allowing people to create their own 3D Razor Scooters, as a way of introducing them to Siemens' CAD software.

“We’re trying to provide a faint glimpse of what it’s like to use our tools and what we’re all about,” says Chris Kelley from Siemens PLM Software. The new tool is based on the company’s Solid Edge design system, and the claim is that they’ll be able to create and configure a scooter in less than a minute, choosing handlebar styles and wheel colours before saving the model to take elsewhere in Second Life.

Siemens PLM Software has more ambitions for Second Life, too, with plans to make it easier to import models created elsewhere using Solid Edge into Second Life, which could then be used within corporate collaboration projects, or simply to show to customers.
