If you're a keen Facebook user, you might already be aware of the Second Life Link application, which lets you link your SL avatar with your Facebook profile, map real-world friends to their SL incarnations, and teleport to your favourite locations. Now, the application's developers have announced some new community features for the application, extending its functionality.
One of these is 'Friend Finder', which lets users type in any Second Life avatar name, and search the Second Life Link database of more than two million SL users, and if found, send them an invite to join Facebook. Co-developer Fire Preibisch says it's a powerful inclusion:
"This is an exiting new feature for the community because it will further help enhance social networks in the virtual world. For example, I had several Second Life™ friends I had made in Second Life™, but didn't know if they were using Facebook, so, using Friend Finder, I did a search and found that about 30% of them where already using Second Life™ Link. So I individually sent them an invite using Facebook. For the friends who were not using Second Life™ Link, our new Friend Finder gave me the option to send them an in world message to join me on Facebook."
Other new features include the ability to send messages from Facebook to friends in Second Life (although not the other way yet), a list of current members who are online now, a matrix of recently-added avatars, and the privacy option to allow SL users to opt out of being sent messages via Facebook. Preibisch says the application currently has more than 1,200 verified avatars, and aims to grow this to 5,000 by next Spring.
