If job postings are any guide, Samsung is planning something in the virtual worlds arena. Samsung Information Systems America is currently
advertising for four positions: an Intelligent Avatar Researcher, a Virtual Worlds Search Researcher, a Virtual Worlds Project Lead, and a Virtual Worlds Interoperability Researcher. The jobs will be based in the company's computer science lab in San Jose. Here's a taste of the blurb:
"The CE (Consumer Electronics) device is fast becoming the de facto portal to the web. Virtual Worlds such as 2nD Life, Entropia, Olive and others are creating the next generation of the web, the Metaverse. Samsung’s San Jose Computer Science Lab (CSL) is developing core VW technologies which enhance the virtual world experience on CE devices. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing demos and prototypes."
It also mentions accessing virtual worlds through internet browsers, but also "lightweight, networked, browser-based devices". This isn't brand new news, mind - Samsung has already given one
interview about its nascent plans in the sector. But it's more evidence of how the next big leap for virtual worlds could be away from the desktop and onto mobile or handheld devices.
