Research teams get grants for studies of health and virtual worlds

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in grants to 12 research teams examining the use of games and virtual worlds for public health initiatives.

Who’s getting the grants? That’s due to be announced tomorrow afternoon, but they include a study examining whether motion-based games can help in the rehabilitation of stroke patients, and another looking at how virtual worlds can be used in the treatment of people in substance abuse programmes, practising virtually to avoid real-world relapses.

It’s the first time grants have been awarded by the Foundation’s Health Games Research programme, which is based at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
