Queensland University of Technology develops VR exercise bike

The stereotype of virtual worlds users is, well, of people who don't get out much - although I'd rather go with a comment I saw once along the lines of 'You can't have a Second Life if you don't have a First Life too'. Nevertheless, it's fair to say that heavy use of virtual worlds or online games does involve sitting down. The Queensland University of Technology has one way to make virtual reality healthier, however. It's developed an exercise bike hooked up to two Nintendo Wii controllers and virtual scenery, giving users the chance to pedal through virtual scenery as they burn calories. "What we have done is develop a system that takes you on a new and exciting journey in virtual exercise," says researcher Gavin Jones. "We have also incorporated sound effects, making this a totally immersive and engaging experience." The system could apparently be adapted to work with rowing machines and treadmills too, and the next step is to incorporate video goggles rather than a screen, to make it even more immersive. Jones thinks there's also potential to build a community around the technology, so people create and share their own worlds. I can see it being hooked up to Second Life too, or for those of us who are cowards, to World of Warcraft for quick getaways... (via Sydney Morning Herald)

It’s already been hooked up to Second Life.  “It” being a treadmill:

We’ll increasingly be doing more physical activities in virtual worlds.  I’d Love to dance.  I.e. having “it” be Dance Dance Revolution.
