PlaySpan buys PayByCash to create new game payments giant

As the drive towards more microtransactions and other new business models for MMOs and virtual worlds gathers pace, so the payment companies who enable it are gearing up to capitalise. PlaySpan has just announced its acquisition of PayByCash, and says the merged company will be one of the "fastest growing commerce and payment services companies" supporting the online games industry.

It seems like a smart deal, with PayByCash offering 70 different payment methods in more than 200 countries, and having experienced success with its pre-pay ‘Ultimate Game Card’ which is sold in retail stores to gamers who don’t have or prefer not to use a credit card.

PayByCash will continue to operate as an individual company, including its upcoming plans to launch PaxGuard, a new fraud protection service. How much do the companies’ activities clash? PayByCash president Kevin Higgins maintains that they complement each other:

“PlaySpan and PayByCash have complementary missions. PayByCash handles payments from consumers across the globe, and PlaySpan gives publishers a place for gamers to spend it. We believe that our publisher partners will continue to benefit from our strong operational and global expertise to drive their micro-transaction revenues.”
