If you're selling hooky Playboy items in Second Life, it must be a bit of a shock to have two Amazonesque Playmate avatars show up and start taking notes. However, that's what's happening in Second Life, with an investigation led by Playboy Island manager MSGiro Grosso.
According to New World Notes, it’s an attempt to find out how widespread these knock-off items are in the virtual world. However, Playboy seems to be taking a mature approach to the findings - rather than squash vendors who are misusing the Playboy logo, the company may seek to partner with some of them.
“In some cases we have already said ‘We love what you designed. Are you up for a rev share for using the brand?’ Some are up for it because we will help promote them. Some are not so co-operative. Some have signed lease agreements with landlords that say ‘no copyright infringement’, and when you alert the landlords they shut the store down. The harder ones may be dealth with through Linden. I’m still deciding.”
It seems like a sensible policy, particularly getting talented content creators on board to create official Playboy merchandise.
