Now Samsung is taking Second Life mobile

Comments [0] | 2 April 2008

What is it about Second Life in particular that's making so many people try to get it running on mobile handsets? Comverse and NTT DoCoMo have both shown off mobile clients for Linden Lab's world in recent months, and now it's Samsung's turn.

Samsung is showing a demo of its technology at the CTIA mobile industry trade show in Las Vegas this week. It also apparently includes an integrated blogging platform, and the ability to contact SL friends via voice or text messages.

The company says it hopes to commercialise the technology by the end of this year. I wonder whether this is more about hype than a genuinely valuable source of revenues. After all, you’d think mobile firms would be keener to mobilise larger virtual worlds like Club Penguin and Webkinz - although in some markets, stringent rules against marketing mobiles to kids might mitigate against that.
