Raph Koster has announced the first virtual world created using Metaplace's platform, and it's not quite what you'd expect. "It's just a simple chat app, with movie playing, soccer balls to kick around, and some other features," he says. "It only uses a fraction of what Metaplace can do, but it's a start..."
It’s called Metachat, and initially it’s available as an application on social network MySpace, which users can add to their profiles. The application isn’t MySpace specific though - instead, it’s using the OpenSocial platform to log people’s MySpace accounts into Metaplace (so, in theory, it could be put on any social network using OpenSocial).
The application was created mainly in-house at Metaplace, although alpha testers contributed too - showing the UGC capabilities of Metaplace’s technology. “This world leverages modules a lot, meaning that many pieces of its functionality are bits and pieces imported from other worlds.”
Most impressively, Metachat was apparently put together in a week. More worlds using Metaplace will launch in the coming weeks and months as previews, including games and, intriguingly, “experimental collaborative music systems”.
