MicroMonster is the latest mobile MMOG funded by item sales

Having written yesterday about EGO, today's news from the multiplayer mobile gaming space concerns MicroMonster, a game developed by German firm Biting Bit. As you may have guessed from the title, it takes a fantasy theme, with players creating their own monster, and then taking it online to battle other people's. The game works over the mobile network or via Bluetooth, and there's also a single-player mode for people to train their monster up.

However, the interesting point is the business model that Biting Bit is using for the game. It's free to download, and there's no monthly subscription charge. Instead, the company plans to make its money by charging players to buy items for their characters, such as weapons and armour. This isn't a new idea for PC-based MMOs, but as far as I'm aware, it's the first time somebody's tried it with a mobile MMOG. What I'll be interested to find out is how players buy these items - whether they can just click and have the price added to their phone bills, or whether they're sent outside the game to a web or WAP site and asked to enter their credit-card details. Clearly, the former would be more seamless. MicroMonster website
