We've reached the point where companies are launching new projects having to promise they're “not just another virtual world for kids”, hinting at the potential saturation of the market. So, Kiwi Heroes is... not just another virtual world for kids. It's an MMO due for release later this year.
It’s the work of Canadian firm Massively Me, who are promising comprehensive character advancement, special powers, social and community features, and a game that’s suitable for both solo and group adventuring.
In other words, this is more World of Warcraft with a youth spin, rather than another Club Penguin wannabe. Although given the target audience, it can’t just be about slaying enemies – there’s “valuable life lessons about social responsibility” too.
What’s more, Massively Me is launching a spin-off non-profit organisation called the Every Kid’s A Hero Foundation, which will support charities around the world. “It’s our goal through both the game and the foundation, to teach kids that anyone can make a difference in the world and that big or small, true heroes are defined by their actions,” says founder and lead architect Mark Wadden.
It’s an interesting dynamic, this. Adult MMOs like World of Warcraft can prosper through their blend of self-interest (get rich), violence (kill things) and co-operation (help other people get rich and kill things too), but for any MMO focusing on kids and teens, working in a more educational or socially responsible element is clearly important too.
Will The Kids go for it? Kiwi Heroes should help us find out.
