Manchester Business School to launch own Second Life island

Comments [0] | 20 March 2008

Manchester Business School is the latest academic institution to announced plans for a virtual presence in Second Life. The school has taken on new media agency Corporation Pop to create an island for it, following their work on the SL presence of musician Richard Hawley.

It’s early days, so there aren’t lots of details of what the virtual Manchester Business School will do. However, it’s not just a promotional build to attract people considering applying for the school. Instead, it’ll be a fully fledged virtual campus for learning and teaching, as well as recruitment. Corporation Pop says the first stages will be live by the summer, with organic growth following after that.

“Universities and other academic institutions are beginning to realise the enormous potential that virtual worlds offer… They provide access to information in a rich environment, in a way that would not be possible through the web or print… Recent estimates put the number of universities with a virtual presence at over 400… We are establishing a real strength in this field and this win follows hot on the heels of our work in Second Life for Richard Hawley.”

One to watch.
