It's time to get the cake'n'candles out for Second Life, which celebrates its fifth birthday today. Linden Lab's virtual world came out of beta on 23rd June 2003, and the company is celebrating the anniversary with a two-week Virtual World Fair, which includes parties, exhibits and discussions. It kicks off today, and lasts until 7th July.
You can check the programme for discussion panels and keynote speeches here - it includes a joint speech from founder Philip Rosedale and new CEO Mark Kingdon, panels on Second Life musicians and virtual DJing, as well as sessions covering corporate use, education, teenagers, and social networking.
It’s set to be an interesting mix of looking back and looking forward, with Second Life facing increasing competition in the virtual world space, while new technologies (mobile for example) offer it new ways of expanding to find new users.
