Linden hires Frank Ambrose as SVP Technology

Linden Lab has announced that it has hired Frank Ambrose to be Senior Vice President, Global Technology. Ambrose, formerly head of technology for infrastructure and network services at AOL, will 'oversee the development of new processes, systems and tools to maximize the scalability of Second Life's network architecture.'

Linden clearly has a technology challenge ahead of it. Scaling a 3D environment is never simple, and is complicated further by the user generated and dynamic content which must be rendered. Further, Linden has also expressed an intention to become the provider of open standards and possibly infrastructure to enable interoperability between virtual worlds. In an interview with Bloomberg, CEO Kingdon talks about the Google threat: 'Who wouldn't be concerned when Google comes after their business?' Clearly building a rock solid technology platform will be part of Second Life's strategy to hold on to its incumbent position, particularly against a Lively which is often (ironically) slow.

"With his extensive and diverse experience managing large network operations, Frank is the ideal hire to ensure that we provide the utmost in stability and user support as Second Life continues to grow," Kingdon said. "Frank has the necessary passion, vision and ingenuity that will help us take the Second Life Grid to new levels of excellence as we scale the platform to accommodate hundreds of thousands or even millions of concurrent users."
