KingsIsle Entertainment to launch Wizard101 MMO for kids

Comments [1] | 23 May 2008

See if you can guess one of the inspirations behind new MMO Wizard101: it puts players in the shoes of wizard apprentices at the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts. Anyone thinking Hogwarts? Actually, why ISN'T there a Harry Potter-themed virtual world or MMO yet...

Anyway, I don’t mean to criticise Wizard101, because the subject matter will clearly appeal to a wide base of children. It’s also well-targeted, being more of an MMO than a virtual world, but targeted at an age group too young for World Of Warcraft (teens and tweens).

Three years of development have apparently already gone into the project, which will feature monsters, spells, magic items and puzzles a-plenty. The world is fully 3D (presumably this means a downloadable client?), and the battles are based around the popular collectible card mechanic.

Wizard101 won’t launch until the third quarter of this year, but it’s got a decent website giving more information in the meantime.

OH AMEN - why isn’t there a Harry Potter MMO/Virtual World?  Talk about dedicated fans who don’t necessarily want to live the epic as much as they want to be a part of the world.  I’ve been asking this question for about 3 years now.  A birdy mentioned that EA was developing one, and then trashed it.  There may be chances for another.  I’ve heard vague whisperings.
