There are a number of guitar tutorial sites that have launched in the last year, and they're all based around video lessons. However, a new site called iPerform 3D is taking the Web 3D route. They start by filming the teachers playing, but use motion capture to then turn that into a virtual 3D guitarist.
It’s not just for show: students can then zoom in and around the teacher to get a different point of view on what they’re playing in real-time. There are also more music-focused features, such as the ability to slow the song down while maintaining its pitch, to learn the notes.
I think it’s a great example of Web 3D, since the 3D is being used to tackle some of the problems that video can’t solve, rather than just being a flashy use of technology for the sake of it. It’s free to sample, but users have to pay a monthly fee of $19.95 to use the actual service. It might sound expensive, but compared to the price of guitar lessons in the real world, it’s quite appealing…
