IAC is certainly one of the companies to watch in the virtual worlds space, given its ownership of the Zwinky virtual world and its acquisitive strategy. The company has just bought Israeli firm StarNet Interactive, which runs the GirlSense fashion community for young girls.
It’s an interesting site with nearly 13 million registered users, according to Worlds In Motion. Users design their own clothing items and sell them in a virtual boutique, while interacting with fellow users on the GirlSense site.
You can see the potential integration with Zwinky, although IAC hasn’t given more details on its plans yet:
“Part of our growth strategy includes acquisition of products and companies that complement our core competencies. Adding Girlsense.com to our existing teen targeted product portfolio provides us with broader teen mindshare, and access to the coveted tween demographic.”
When I talk to people who are more doubtful about this industry, one of the common questions is ‘Why would you bother creating an avatar?’. Sites like GirlSense show that there’s a decent audience out there if you can answer that question.
