HarperCollins to launch Lola’s Land literary virtual world for girls

And still the virtual worlds aimed at younger internet users keep coming. The latest company to jump on the bandwagon is book publisher HarperCollins, which next month is launching Lola's Land, a world aimed at tweenage girls.

The world is based on an existing character, Lola Love, who was created by writer Lisa Clark. According to the announcement, the world will “reinforce the Think Pink manifesto of the feisty Lola Love character” who “encourages girls to feel good about themselves in every way - loving who they are, feeling confident, standing up to peer pressure and thinking positively”.

The world is the result of a partnership between HarperCollins and online firm Mykindaplace, although advertising sales - yes, there will be advertising for products that will help these girls feel even more good about themselves - will be handled by Sky Digital Media.

Anyway, the site promises editorial, games and social networking features alongside its virtual world, with subjects including music, fashion, beauty and positive-thinking. Users will earn points by playing games and entering competitions, which can then be spent on the site (presumably in customising their avatars). There’ll be two new games a month, as well as an official Lola blog. It’s due to launch on 14th April.
