Gaia Online launches Facebook application

gaia-omg-facebook.jpgThe latest virtual world to venture onto Facebook is Gaia Online, which has created what it describes as a "miniature version" of its world as a Facebook application. It's called OMG, and lets people use their Gaia avatar in a cut-down version of Gaia Online, playing mini-games, signing guestbooks and adding friends, and earning points to be used in the full virtual world.

It's not Gaia Online's first move into Web 2.0, mind. In December, the company launched OMG as a widget for the Bebo social network. The new Facebook application will hook into that, allowing Bebo and Facebook users to interact. Other social networks will follow soon, according to CEO Craig Sherman:
"Gaia and social networks are similar in that they are places that empower users to self express and connect with friends, so bridging the two is a logical next step in the evolution of the Internet. We're not stopping here either, there are several other popular social networks out there and we're building new features that will enable Gaia to be everywhere teens are online."
It'll be interesting to see how OMG works - whether it picks up a big userbase of NON-Gaia users and then introduces them to the full world, or whether it attracts a number of existing Gaia users too. The ability to earn points from OMG is clearly designed to attract the latter, but I wonder if they'll want to use a cut-down version. Looking at the screenshot, I also think OMG could be suitable for a mobile application at some point, which would be intriguing... OMG Facebook application
