With so much news on launches of child-focused virtual worlds and MMOs, it's unusual to hear news about one shutting down. However, given that the company doing the shutting down is Disney, it's more about nudging users into its newer worlds, rather than any lack of faith in the sector.
What’s closing is Virtual Magic Kingdom, the free-to-play MMO that Disney launched in 2005. It’ll shut down on 21st May, although users are being encouraged to migrate to Disney’s newer virtual worlds and MMOs by producer Seth Mendelsohn:
“In the time since we’ve launched VMK, we’ve seen many players come and go, and we’re hoping you will graduate from VMK too – in particular, to games like Pirates of the Caribbean Online, Disney’s ToonTown Online, Club Penguin and the upcoming Fairies and Cars online virtual worlds. We think you’ll find you enjoy those just as much as VMK – if not more.”
Unsurprisingly, users are kicking up a bit of a stink. So why shut it down? Part of the answer likely lies in the fact that VMK is slightly dated now, running on Shockwave. But also because it was designed by Habbo Hotel parent company Sulake, rather than Disney itself. With the latter now focusing on its internal studios, It’s perhaps not surprising to see the drive to get users into its newer worlds.
