Coca Cola launches avatar-based Facebook application

Comments [0] | 1 April 2008

It's a big day for Facebook news, what with our earlier post about Vivaty's funding for 3D chatrooms on the social network. Now Coca Cola is getting into the Facebook / VR game, with an avatar-based application promoting its Burn drink.

Users add the application to their profiles, and then create an avatar alter ego, who goes clubbing every night and reports back to you in the morning.

The app is connected, so your avatar can go out with avatars of your friends, or meet other avatars. The more users interact with the application, the more personalisation features they unlock in the form of clothes, hairstyles and furniture for their avatar’s room.

It certainly looks like a slick application, but what’s interesting is that it’s a marketing campaign funded by a huge consumer brand - food for thought for the startups looking to do this sort of thing on Facebook themselves. Will Coke’s version be more or less successful than unbranded avatar apps?
