Casual games firm secures $3.5 of funding to spur new virtual world

Normally, news that a casual games developer had raised some VC cash wouldn't come within the scope of this blog. However, Three Rings could be different. The company, which is best known for web games like Puzzle Pirates and Bang Howdy, has raised $3.5 million in new funding.

The round was led by True Ventures, with participation from Chance Technologies, Amicus Capital, Mercury Capital Partners and various angel investors. Three Rings apparently had revenues of $4 million last year, from a mixture of subscriptions and microtransactions.

But here’s the interesting thing: the company is working on a new project called Whirled, which the company’s site describes as a “web-based social world for chat, games and player-created content”. It’s currently in alpha testing (you can sign up via the link below), and looks to be an intriguing mix of casual gameplay judging by the screenshots.
