Buried down the press release for a new extra-healthy Burger King kids meal (it “boasts an exceptional nutrition profile” apparently) is news that the fast-food chain is getting into the online interactive entertainment business with the help of one of the biggest games brands around - Nintendo's Pokemon.
Here’s the relevant passage:
“A new Club BKSM Web site will launch in early July, giving kids and preteens access to interactive and age-appropriate games that sharpen skills and feature Burger King Corp. partner properties, such as Pokémon. Site visitors that obtain their parent’s permission and register at www.ClubBK.com can navigate the virtual world of games and accumulate points.” [our emphasis]
The fact that this is online games featuring Pokemon is a pretty big deal – it’s an example of a Nintendo franchise appearing on a non-Nintendo gaming platform – but talk of Burger King’s ‘virtual world of games’ has huge relevance for our industry.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether parents are as keen on the idea – that new meal better had be as nutritious as it promises…
