Boutique virtual agencies staying faithful to Second Life

We covered Reuters' article about larger virtual agencies looking beyond Second Life for new projects the other day, but New World Notes has followed it up with another angle on the story, pointing out that smaller boutique agencies aren't ditching Linden Lab's world.

“it’s an inevitable market adjustment,” writes Wagner James Au. “At the moment, Second Life has a monthly active user base of 550,000. The larger companies (say more than a dozen employees) need to focus on virtual worlds with a greater number of potential eyeballs and return on investment. At the same time, with less mouths to feed, smaller studios can do lower budget campaigns and show decent ROI.”

He cites the likes of Rezzable, Aimee Weber, Dancing Ink, AI Design Studio, Agencia Click, Involve 3D, Clever Zebra, Second Marketing, Daden and Green Grotto, among others. It’s a positive counterpart to the Reuters piece, although it’s made me wonder whether any of these boutique agencies are thinking about diversifying into other virtual worlds, or whether they’ll stay solely Second Life focused (if that’s their bag).

Meanwhile, Reuters is by no means down on Second Life. it’s just published an article claiming that the in-world economy is growing at a rate of 15% annually, and reporting Linden Lab CFO John Zdanowski saying that Second Life had a GDP of $300 million at the end of March.
