Trading card-based virtual world Bella Sara is taking a step into the handheld gaming space, after its creator Hidden City Games signed a licensing deal with Codemasters to turn it into a DS and PC game later this year. It's one of the first deals of this type, where a virtual world has gone from the web to traditional gaming platforms.
Bella Sara is aimed at tweenage girls, and revolves around trading cards of horses, with each having a code to activate a virtual version of that horse in the Bella Sara virtual world. The company has sold more than 40 million of the cards since launching last year, while the virtual world has signed up more than two million registered users.
So what form will the game take? It seems it won’t be tied to the trading cards in quite the same way, but will still focus on players riding, caring for and trading horses with friends. I’d be interested to see if there is potential for interaction between DS games and online virtual worlds though - in essence, a DS version of a virtual world gives users a richer mobile experience than a mobile phone would.
