MMO blog Massively has a really interesting preview of Cartoon Network's forthcoming MMO FusionFall, which is aimed at 8-14 year-olds and features characters from a range of the broadcaster's cartoons. It's a pretty sizeable project too, boasting talent that's previously worked on Star Wars Galaxies, Ultima Online and Tabula Rasa.
Characters included are Max and Bloo, the Powerpuff Girls, Ben 10, and Dexter and Dee Dee, who all have their own zones within the gameworld. Massively poses the question of whether players will be frustrated that they can’t actually be these characters in the game, however.
It sounds like there are some gameplay innovations in FusionFall, such as its focus on platform-jumping, and the interchangeable Nano add-ons that players can buy to help them out. Moreover, the game shows that broadcasters like Cartoon Network are in an ideal position to create an all-encompassing MMO (or, indeed, a virtual world - I wonder what goes into a media firm’s decision to make one or the other) based on a range of brands, rather than just one.
It’s certainly one to watch, anyway, not least to see how the business model works for this kind of demographic.
