US firm Advanced Content Services has issued a mysterious announcement alluding to its plans to develop and launch an "interactive online talent competition" involving Second Life.
Company boss S. Shawn Spahr is certainly bullish about the potential for the project, about which there are no further details:
“This task is quite an undertaking and once fully implemented could top the success seen by the Television Talent contests… The Company has established many alliances within the entertainment world, including major record labels and producers. Everyone is very excited about the project and we are working very hard to meet our internal deadlines.”
I’ll say it now: virtual reality talent contests aren’t gong to be more popular than the likes of American Idol and The X Factor. That doesn’t mean they aren’t an interesting and potentially profitable opportunity, but to pitch them as having more mainstream appeal than the large TV shows seems optimistic at best.
I hadn’t heard of Advanced Content Solutions, so Googled them, and found this posting on the Investors Hub website, which is hardly complimentary. Still, the idea of a virtual talent contest is intriguing, so it’ll be interesting to see how this one pans out.
