US firm 8D World has raised "meaningfully more than $1 million" in its first-round of funding, from Spark Capital. The company is reportedly working on a massively multiplayer online game, although the company is in stealth mode, so hasn't given many details on its plans.
The company is founded by Rick Goodman, who’s worked on games like Age Of Empires and Empire Earth. It seems its new project may launch first in Asia, with the company having offices in Boston and China. The snatches of screenshots on its official website hint at a fantasy theme for the new MMO, while the About page promises that “we’re working on a revolutionary new project to build a virtual world that will benefit a massive world-wide audience. And, when it’s done, it’ll make the world a better place.”
The recruitment section hints at its direction though. Coding-wise, 8D World is recruiting software engineers, MMO server engineers and senior web application developers, while on the art side it’s recruiting flash developers alongside UI artists and 3D texture/modelling artists.
The company is certainly one to watch this year, anyway.
