3DVU launches Flyder location-based 3D virtual reality mobile game

If that sounds like quite a niche, well, you're right. But in a mobile games market saturated by puzzle games and movie platform titles, Flyder at least stands out. It's part game part application really, although the term its maker 3DVU is using is '3D Picture Location Based Game'.

It’s available for Windows Mobile and Symbian phones in two versions, one for the US and one for the UK. It involves flying over a 3D photo-map of whichever country you choose, checking out landmarks including cities, national parks and other locations. Users can also tag their favourite places for future reference.

Flyder is available through various mobile application websites now, for $19.99. The thing I’m failing to understand is where the game element comes in - it sounds like a Google Earth-esque flythrough, rather than a game as such. Are there tasks to complete, for example, or do you just zoom around looking for interesting tourist spots? It doesn’t make the app any less impressive, of course, but it does have an impact on whether Flyder should be described as a game.

Anyway, check it out here.
